A Flower Demonstration with Surfleet Ladybirds Club

Helen recently spent an evening at the St Laurence Church Fraiser Room in Surfleet, sharing her 40 years of floristry experience with the Surfleet Ladybirds Ladies Club and demonstrating with seasonal British-grown flowers from many of our locally established growers.
“At Evolve, we love to inspire and connect with local groups”, Helen says, “and the Surfleet Ladybirds club was a delight – the scones and cake were excellent too!”
Helen had the opportunity to demonstrate some of the techniques and ideas that go into creating her designs. As well as watching the arrangements take shape, the evening gave everyone plenty of opportunity to chat about flowers, flower arranging and their own experiences.
There was a lovely reminder of just how long a good bouquet can stay in someone’s memory. Several of the ladies remembered receiving flowers from Evolve for special occasions several years ago – including a Golden Wedding anniversary and a birthday – and were still enthusiastic about them five or six years later.

The ladies were also delighted to see the bounty of seasonal, British-grown flowers Helen had brought along, sourced from established growers in the local area.
Floral demonstrations for clubs and groups
Helen regularly gives demonstrations to local groups, including flower clubs, community groups and NAFAS (National Association of Flower Arranging Societies) groups. Her demonstrations can be tailored to the group and are a great way to combine floristry, flower arranging, creativity and a social evening. Cakes are a bonus! Some clubs even pop the fizz!
Whether your members are experienced flower arrangers or simply enjoy flowers and want to learn something new, Helen brings her professional experience and enthusiasm for British-grown flowers to every demonstration.
And, as the Surfleet Ladybirds discovered, there is always plenty to talk about along the way. Helen has amusing stories about her flowery antics and lots of hints and tips too!
If your club or group is looking for a floral demonstration, get in touch with Evolve Flowers to find out more about booking Helen.
And why St Laurence Church?
If you’re wondering why St Laurence Church in Surfleet is the featured image, it’s because it has a famous leaning tower (they’re not just in Italy!)
The church is dedicated to St Laurence, who was martyred on a gridiron over 1,800 years ago. For this reason, the weather vane on the top of the spire takes the form of a gilded gridiron.
The tower and spire have a very distinct lean, as the foundations started to sink into the soft fenland soil when the tower was built between 1270 and 1350. The tip of the spire is over six feet from the perpendicular.
Local legend maintains that the tower bowed to a passing knight!
Most of the church is built in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles between 1270 and 1480, although parts date back to the early Norman period (1066–1130). The church is also one of the few in England to possess a peal of 12 bells. This beautiful church is well worth a visit, and an interesting guide is available for visitors.
